GPT-4 is here: what scientists think

While we didn’t get to see some of the consumer facing features that we would have liked, it was a developer-focused livestream and so we aren’t terribly surprised. Still, there were definitely some highlights, such as building a website from a handwritten drawing, and getting to see the multimodal capabilities in action was exciting. Using the Discord bot created in the GPT-4 Playground, OpenAI was able to take a photo of a handwritten website (see photo) mock-up and turn it into a  working website with some new content generated for the website.

GPT-4 can also score a 700 out of 800 on the SAT math test, compared to a 590 in its previous version. The technology can pass a simulated legal bar exam with a score that would put it in the top 10 percent of test takers, while its immediate predecessor GPT-3.5 scored in the bottom 10 percent (watch out, lawyers). “The image is funny because it shows a squirrel holding a camera and taking a photo of a nut as if it were a professional photographer.

New embedding models and API updates

You see, GPT-4 requires more computational resources to run as compared to older models. That’s likely a big reason why OpenAI has locked its use behind the paid ChatGPT Plus subscription. But if you simply want to try out the new model’s capabilities first, you’re in luck. If you’re looking for a guide on how to use GPT-4’s image input feature, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. OpenAI is collaborating with third parties to enable the feature and hasn’t integrated it into ChatGPT, at least not yet. The first partner, Be My Eyes, uses GPT-4 to assist the visually challenged by converting images to text.

For example, this extends to being able to check out a meme and tell you why it’s funny. GPT-3 came out in 2020, and an improved version, GPT 3.5, was used to create ChatGPT. The launch of GPT-4 is much anticipated, with more excitable members of the AI community and Silicon Valley world already declaring it to be a huge leap forward. One tangible way people are measuring the capabilities of new artificial intelligence tools is by seeing how well they can perform on standardized tests, like the SAT and the bar exam. OpenAI also claims that the new model supports a chatbot that’s more factual, creative, concise, and can understand images, instead of just text.

Without knowing what’s under the hood, it’s hard to immediately validate OpenAI’s claims that its latest tool is more accurate and less biased than before. As more people use the technology in the coming weeks, we’ll see if it ends up being not only meaningfully more useful but also more responsible than what came before it. Updated GPT-3.5 Turbo model and lower pricing

However, he also asked the chatbot to explain why an image of a squirrel holding a camera was funny to which it replied “It’s a humorous situation because squirrels typically eat nuts, and we don’t expect them to use a camera or act like humans”. Microsoft also needs this multimodal functionality to keep pace with the competition.

Other early adopters include Stripe, which is using GPT-4 to scan business websites and deliver a summary to customer support staff. Morgan Stanley is creating a GPT-4-powered system that’ll retrieve info from company documents and serve it up to financial analysts. And Khan Academy is leveraging GPT-4 to build some sort of automated tutor. To collect this data, we took conversations that AI trainers had with the chatbot. We randomly selected a model-written message, sampled several alternative completions, and had AI trainers rank them. Using these reward models, we can fine-tune the model using Proximal Policy Optimization.

In the coming months, we plan to further improve the ability for developers to view their API usage and manage API keys, especially in larger organizations. First, developers can now assign permissions to API keys from the API keys page. For example, a key could be assigned read-only access to power an internal tracking dashboard, or restricted to only access certain endpoints. But developers are already finding incredible ways to use the updated tool, which now has the ability to analyze images and write code in all major programming languages. First, we are focusing on the Chat Completions Playground feature that is part of the API kit that developers have access to. This allows developers to train and steer the GPT model towards the developers goals.

Large language models use a technique called deep learning to produce text that looks like it is produced by a human. OpenAI claims that GPT-4 can “take in and generate up to 25,000 words of text.” That’s significantly more than the 3,000 words that ChatGPT can handle. But the real upgrade is GPT-4’s multimodal capabilities, allowing the chatbot AI to handle images as well as text. Based on a Microsoft press event earlier this week, it is expected that video processing capabilities will eventually follow suit. Even as LLMs are great at producing boilerplate copy, many critics say they fundamentally don’t and perhaps cannot understand the world.

Others expressed concern that GPT-4 still pulls information from a database that lacks real-time or up-to-date information, as it was trained on data up to August 2022. The time-gap could make trusting the accuracy of what’s online more difficult. “The real breakthrough will occur, however, when an AI system…contains up-to-date information—ideally updated in real-time or, failing that, every few hours,” says Oliver Chapman, CEO of supply chain specialists OCI. With its wide display of knowledge, the new GPT has also fueled public anxiety over how people will be able to compete for jobs outsourced to artificially trained machines. “Looks like I’m out of job,” one user posted on Twitter in response to a video of someone using GPT-4 to turn a hand-drawn sketch into a functional website.

Microsoft’s original chatbot, named Tay and released in 2016, became misogynistic and racist, and was quickly discontinued. GPT-2 displayed bias against women, queer people, and other demographic groups; GPT-3 said racist and sexist things; and ChatGPT was accused of making similarly toxic comments. New Bing, which runs a version of GPT-4, has chat gpt-4 release date written its own share of disturbing and offensive text—teaching children ethnic slurs, promoting Nazi slogans, inventing scientific theories. It’s certainly pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible just a few months ago.
